DAVENPORT, Iowa — The German American Heritage Center and Museum near downtown Davenport has been officially designated as a Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area Site.
The new partnership will be celebrated with a ribbon cutting at the museum at 11 a.m. on July 17.
“We are excited with the addition of (the) German American Heritage Center and Museum as one of the heritage area’s newest sites,” Candy Welch-Streed, SSNHA director of partnerships, said in a press release.
Silos & Smokestacks preserves the history of American farm life and agribusiness while telling the story of the present day. It's one of 62 federally designated heritage areas in the nation and operates as a member of the National Park Service National Heritage Area System.
The heritage area covers 37 counties in the northeast quadrant of Iowa and has designated 110 attractions, including dairy farms, vineyards, museums and tractor assembly plants, as heritage area sites.
The German American Heritage Center and Museum was founded in 1994 to preserve the heritage of German-speaking ancestors in the area. It's meant to enrich the knowledge of the German immigrant experience and its impact on American culture.
The center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
