HAMILTON COUNTY, Iowa — The Hamilton County Sheriff's Department will soon have new leadership.
Sheriff Douglas Timmons announced Wednesday that he won't be running for reelection at the end of his current term, which comes to a close in 2024.
"This decision was not easy. Law enforcement is all I have known for the past 30 years; I will greatly miss my profession ... This office would not be what it is today without my dedicated employees. Thank you for all that you do!!!" Timmons shared in a farewell post on Facebook.
Timmons began his career in 1995 as an officer at the Webster City Police Department before becoming a deputy at the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office, according to his election website. In 2000, he returned home to Hamilton County as a deputy.
Though the last eight years as sheriff in Hamilton County were "the most memorable" of his career, Timmons acknowledged that law enforcement takes a toll on people and impacts family life.
"When you are in a 24/7 service profession you miss a lot of family time. In retirement I hope to make up for some of that lost time. Thank you, Hamilton County, for all the love and support you have shown. It has been a privilege to serve as your Hamilton County Sheriff," he said.
