Body recovered following house fire in Jasper County, sheriff's office says

The body will be taken to the Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office for identification and autopsy.

COLFAX, Iowa — Fire crews recovered a dead body from a home in Jasper County following a fire Saturday night, according to the Jasper County Sheriff's Office

Officials received reports of a house fire on S. 52nd Ave. W, just 1.5 miles southeast of Colfax. 

When crews arrived, the home was engulfed in flames. As firefighters worked to put out the fire, they learned one person was believed to be inside the house. 

Fire crews worked through the night to extinguish the fire and locate the person inside the home. 

Search and rescue crews eventually located the body of a deceased individual in the basement of the home at around 10:45 a.m. Sunday. 

The body will be taken to the Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office for identification and autopsy. 

The investigation into the fire is ongoing.
