Iowa family serves meals to victims of Hurricane Helene in Asheville, North Carolina

The Getty's are a full-time nurse and full-time farmer, but run a food truck on the side that they are driving to help serve meals to those impacted by Helene.

URBANA, Iowa — The impacts of Hurricane Helene are still being felt across the country, and people from all over are stepping in to help out, including Iowans.

Jim and Angie Getty are from Eastern Iowa, and both have full-time jobs as a nurse and a farmer, but on the side, they run a food truck business.

On Saturday, the Getty's are arriving in Asheville, North Carolina to serve free meals to those impacted by the hurricane.

The Getty's have EMS and fire department experience, so they say helping others is what they love to do.

“Our goal is to respond to everyone," said Jim and Angie Getty, owners of Country Cooking Concessions in Urbana. "We just do the best we can and what we can and we're able to do this one, so we're glad to do it.”

The Getty's have a trailer packed to the brim of food, water and supplies. They also brought a John Deere Gator vehicle to deliver meals to those who can't come in person.

The food truck will be parked at a local church, First Baptist Church of Asheville.

“He [the church's pastor] said they were completely devastated right there," Getty said. "They were going to try and do something with the church, as far as making some kind of meals for a short few hours, but he said they didn't really have the ability to do it, so if we come in and do it, they would be more than happy."

The Getty's are no stranger to overcoming and responding to a tragedy like this.

The family responded to Hurricane Ian two years ago, that's after overcoming their own experience in Iowa.

“We know what it's like to be flooded," Getty said. "We were devastated here in Iowa, and so, we just want to help people through that tragedy and help them, hopefully they can get back on their feet."

They say they couldn't be more blessed, and they aren't doing this alone.

The Getty's are accepting Venmo donations to continue serving free meals in Asheville. You can find the information to help out on their Facebook page.
