DES MOINES, Iowa — The number of Safe Haven babies in 2024 reached six this week, with the newest turned over to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on Tuesday.
Iowa HHS said the infant girl born on Nov. 11 will be placed under temporary foster care until permanent adoption can be attained.
Since the Safe Haven Act went into effect over 20 years ago, HHS has received 72 infants, 10 of which it received in 2023.
The Iowa Safe Haven Act offers a solution to parents who determine they cannot care for an infant up to 90 days old. Safe havens where infants can be relinquished include hospitals and police or fire stations.
