1 dead, 1 injured in Jasper County crash Saturday afternoon

The incident remains under investigation, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

NEWTON, Iowa — One woman was killed and a man was injured after a head-on collision in Jasper County Saturday afternoon.

A 2024 International truck was traveling southbound in the 3200 block of Highway T-22 around 4:27 p.m. when the right side tires went off the edge of the road, Iowa State Patrol said. The driver overcorrected to the left, crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with another vehicle traveling northbound.

Officials said the other vehicle took evasive action to the right, but the collision caused both vehicles to end up in a ditch.

51-year-old Jill Vandyke of Lynnville, a passenger in the northbound vehicle, died at the scene, according to Iowa State Patrol. The driver, Gerry Vandyke, 56, also of Lynnville, was injured and transported to a nearby hospital.

Officials said the driver of the truck was not injured in the collision.

Sgt. Alex Dinkla with the Iowa State Patrol said weather contributed to the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
