NEWTON — Local volunteers held the official launch of Jasper County Crime Stoppers Monday at the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.
The nonprofit began meeting last May in an effort to support local law enforcement and help Jasper County become a safer place.
“This mission is met by creating a vital link between the public and law enforcement,” said Abigail Pelzer, chair of Jasper County Crime Stoppers. “This partnership will assist our Jasper County communities by helping to prevent and fight crime through an anonymous tip program.”
Thanks to the work of volunteers, Pelzer said the group obtained software that allows citizens to anonymously report crimes via text, phone or online. These anonymous tipsters who help bring criminals to justice are eligible to receive a reward of up to $1,000 for their assistance.
“We are excited to bring this effort to our local communities because of Crime Stoppers’ national success,” Pelzer said. “To date, Crime Stoppers has been an effective tool in solving thousands of felony crimes and recovering millions of dollars in stolen merchandise throughout the US.”
