Keeping Pools Clean During The Heat

ANKENY – With temperatures reaching 100 degrees, and the heat index soaring past that point, it’s been one of the busiest weeks for pools in quite some time.

The Prairie Ridge Aquatic Center has geared up for the one of the hottest times of the year and is prepared to keep people cool.

“The pool is usually around 80 degrees, so that helps keep them cool. Especially when it feels like 110 degrees,” says manager Rachel Manderscheid.

She says the guards take extra precaution to make sure people are okay.

“Guards are trained on how to recognize heat stroke and heat exhaustion and as we rotate we are encouraged to make sure that we’re looking at the grass. If we see any patrons that are laying down, we’re making sure that they’re okay, that it’s not really ragged or anything like that.”

In order to guarantee that the pool water is clean since so many people are going in and out during this time of the year, two tests, one to test the PH Balance and the other for the Chlorine are done.

“Even when there’s not people here, we have people that check it during the night and early in the morning in order to make sure that everything is okay and it’s dealt with before people even get here,” says Rachel.
