DES MOINES, Iowa — It's been a presidential race with a lot of twists and turns, making this an unprecedented election. Especially for first-time Democratic voters.
'Excited' and 'motivated' are two words first-time Democratic voters used to describe their feelings towards voting this November. However, those words come after President Biden's exit from the race.
It's a presidential race first-time voters told Local 5 they will remember. The presidential ticket hasn't seen an incumbent drop out of the race after a primary in over 50 years.
The change of candidates is something Drake Democrats' Chair Michael Mitchell believes will attract younger voters.
"I think it's now we have something to vote for," Mitchell said. "With Biden it was more, we're voting against Trump."
First-time voters are educating themselves and finding ways to navigate the changes.
"So, first-time voting I'm really excited," said Will Blevins, Political Director of Drake Democrats. "With the new nominee, Kamala, I think it's really energized not only myself, but other young people and not only in Iowa, but across the country."
After Joe Biden's debate performance in June, while first-time voters were still planning to head to the polls, it raised concerns and confusion.
"Definitely interesting to see, it made me question is this usually how it goes," said Lila Khan, Treasurer and Secretary of Drake Democrats.
While voters are still supporters of President Biden, Khan and Blevins are encouraged by Harris' ability to appeal to a new generation of voters.
"I think it's very exciting that it's kind of ushering in new leadership and kind of younger voices," Blevins said.
Overall, the first-time voters are remembering the opportunity voters have and encouraging other first-time voters to make their voices heard.
"This is your time, your time to use your voice, you know speak your truth," Khan said.
