'Lord of the Rings' actor Viggo Mortensen visits Meskwaki Powwow Thursday

The appearance came as a surprise to event attendees.

TAMA, Iowa — Actor Viggo Mortensen, known especially for his role in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy as Aragon, visited the Meskwaki Settlement for its 108th Annual Meskwaki Powwow Thursday according to the celebration's Facebook.

According to the post by the Meskwaki Powwow page, the visit came as a surprise, but the group was extremely thankful regardless saying, "We appreciate and are honored for Mr. Mortensen taking time out his schedule to spend some time amongst the Meskwaki Community."

Besides "Lord of the Rings," Mortensen is also known for “The Green Book”, “A History of Violence” and “Hildago”

Most recently, he directed and starred in the 2023 western, "The Dead Don't Hurt."

The Meskwaki Powwow continues until Sunday at the Meskwaki Settlement with Grand Entries beginning at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day.
