Marshalltown resident hospitalized with 'extensive burns' after garage fire, police say

Investigation shows the fire began after flammable liquids were stored too close to a newly-installed wood burning stove in the garage.

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Marshalltown resident is hospitalized with "extensive burns" following an early morning garage fire, the fire department said in Saturday a press release.

Fire crews responded to the fire at a two-car detached garage on E. North Street around 5 a.m. on Feb. 17. The fire didn't spread to any other structures, and firefighters were able to get the blaze under control in 90 minutes.

Investigation shows the fire began after flammable liquids were stored too close to a newly-installed wood burning stove in the garage.

Police say an occupant was trying to rescue items from the structure, burning themselves in the process.

First responders transported the injured person to Unity Point Health for "extensive burns". The patient was then transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for more treatment.

The Marshalltown police, public works and fire departments worked alongside Unity Point Health EMS and Alliant Energy to respond to the fire.
