Multiple political yard signs stolen in Clive, police say theft charges could be filed

The Clive Police Department said trespassing on property and stealing something can result in theft charges.

CLIVE, Iowa — Multiple political campaign signs have been stolen in the metro, the Clive Police Department confirmed with Local 5 News on Tuesday.

Clive PD posted to Facebook on Monday about the issue and said property owners have a constitutional right to show support for their preferred candidate.

It may seem unnecessary to remind people not to steal from other peoples' property, and that's exactly how Lisa Earles says she feels after Harris-Walz political signs were stolen from outside her home in Clive.

"I was disappointed that people think this was the response to not agreeing to your candidates," Earles told Local 5 News. "But, I wasn't that surprised."

Earles says one of her political signs was ripped off the back gate by a group of people she heard outside her home on Saturday night -- leaving broken zip ties. She added that another one of the signs out front had been rooted from its base.

"It's one thing to not be shy with your opinion, but to take away someone else's right to share their opinion, is a step above," Earles added.

It's now something Clive police said it couldn't believe it would have to keep an eye on, adding theft charges could be filed if signs are stolen when trespassing on someone else's property.

Polk County Republicans told Local 5 News it hasn't heard of any political sign stealing from members of its party, while Polk County Democrats said multiple voters claim to have had their "painted signs" stolen from them (notably in Ankeny and Clive).

If you catch anyone stealing signs from peoples' property, the Clive Police Department said to call 911 and share any security camera footage you may have as evidence.
