DES MOINES, Iowa — National Night Out is being celebrated across the nation Tuesday night, with the metro having its fair share of celebrations.
National Night Out (NNO) began when the campaign was first introduced in 1984 by Matt Peskin. After first starting out in Philadelphia, the event grew into a nationwide gathering of local police departments and their communities.
What began as small celebrations on front porches has grown into nationwide block parties, festivals, parades, and more community events. Since its founding 41 years ago, there are now 38 million participants and 17,000 communities, according to the National Night Out website.
Most events begin between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., and end between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.
