National Weather Service confirms 12 tornadoes touched down on Thursday

The National Weather Service confirmed Monday that a dozen tornadoes touched down in central Iowa last Thursday.

The National Weather Service confirmed Monday that a dozen tornadoes touched down in central Iowa last Thursday.

Both the Marshalltown and Pella tornadoes were rated EF-3 tornadoes with maximum wind speeds of 144 mph. The Bondurant tornado was rated EF-2 with maximum wind speeds of 115 mph.

The other nine confirmed tornadoes have not received a rating yet as the National Weather Service continues to analyze photos, videos high resolution satellite imagery. Additional tornadoes may be added to this list in the future.

Originally, 27 tornadoes were reported by storm spotters. Many of those were multiple reports of the same tornado.

Thursday’s tornado outbreak pushes Iowa’s tornado count this year up to 27. Last year’s total was 55.
