'We will be closed for a few days': For 2nd time in a year, car crashes into popular Des Moines coffee shop

Early Wednesday morning, a vehicle smashed into the front side of Northern Vessel coffee shop for the second time in less than a year.

DES MOINES, Iowa — A car veered off the road, slamming into the front of a popular downtown Des Moines coffee shop — again.

Around 2 a.m. Wednesday, a vehicle smashed into the front side of Northern Vessel, located at 1201 Keosauqua Way, destroying the entrance and shattering glass.

Northern Vessel founder T.J. Rude shared the news in an Instagram post Wednesday morning, saying in part: "We're going to get through this. We've been here before, and we're going to come back with a vengeance."

The storefront was the victim of another stolen vehicle hit-and-run back in August 2023. In that case, a stolen car from the Urbandale area slammed into the business' front window during a Saturday rush, hitting one pedestrian on the sidewalk and narrowly avoiding customers.

"Everyone's okay. No one got injured. Another stolen vehicle," Rude said in the video.

Police confirmed with Local 5 that the incident call came in as a hit-and-run, though it's unconfirmed whether the vehicle was stolen.

The coffee shop expects to reopen in "a few days".
