Ottumwa police, Iowa DCI investigating reported stabbing as homicide

The Iowa State Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine 34-year-old Samuel Gallegos-Ramirez's cause of death.

OTTUMWA, Iowa — A 34-year-old Ottumwa man is dead after a possible stabbing late Monday night, according to a press release from Ottumwa police and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation officials. 

Police said they responded to reports of a stabbing near a home on Ward Street around 10:45 p.m. on Monday. Outside of the house, they found 34-year-old Samuel Gallegos-Ramirez of Ottumwa with injuries. Police have not confirmed whether the injuries were consistent with stab wounds.

Crews transported Gallegos-Ramirez to the Ottumwa Regional Health Center, where he was later pronounced dead. 

Police are now investigating his death as a homicide, and the Iowa State Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine his cause of death. 

At this time, no charges have been filed, and police claim there is no ongoing threat to the public.
