Home Values Go Up- Is that Good or Bad-_96727288

(POLK COUNTY) – Thousands in Central Iowa likely noticed their home values went up quite dramatically on your property assessments.

Polk County sent those assessments out in March, 177,000 of them. They expect about 10,000 of them to be protested.

That’s because on average, home values increased about 8 percent, but some people saw a much bigger jump.

Polk County Assessor Randy Ripperger said, “A lot of good things are happening. Low unemployment, job growth, vacancies are down. The fundamentals we look at are very strong.”

A board of Polk County citizens will start reviewing protests, the deadline to file was May 1st.

The assessor says about half the time the property owners who filed the protests will see a reduction their property assessment.

A couple more things to keep in mind, if your property taxes do go up because your assessed value went up – make sure you have enough money in your escrow account to pay for that.

And you have a little time, your new assessed value won’t actually kick in for 18 months..
