Pedestrian hit by car is in 'critical condition', Polk County Sheriff's Office says

The area where the accident occurred had no sidewalks or crosswalks, and officials claim it was "not well-lit".

POLK COUNTY, Iowa — A pedestrian is in the hospital in "critical condition" after being hit by a car in northeast Des Moines Wednesday night.

Multiple people reported that a man had been hit by a car near the 4800 block of NE 14th Street just before 8 p.m. on Feb. 27. When Polk County Sheriff's Office personnel arrived to the scene just south of I-80, they found an unconscious adult male in the middle of the road, the department said.

First responders took the pedestrian to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

The man allegedly crossed the northbound lanes of NE 14th Street while wearing all black, which led to the incident. The area where the accident occurred had no sidewalks or crosswalks, and officials claim it was "not well-lit".

The vehicle's driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. At this time, no charges have been filed, and the pedestrian has not been identified.
