Pedestrian dies after being hit by car, Polk County Sheriff's Office says

Witnesses say the area where the accident happened was "not well-lit."

DES MOINES, Iowa — A man is dead after being hit by a car Monday night, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said in a press release. 

Deputies responded to the accident at NW 2nd Street around 8:15 p.m. When they arrived, they found the male victim receiving medical help from witnesses. 

EMS arrived on scene shortly after deputies, at which time they took over medical care. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Officials say early investigation indicates the victim was walking in the street when he was struck by a car. Witnesses say the area was "not well-lit" and the victim was dressed in dark clothing. 

Those in the car remained on the scene and worked with investigators. The identity of the victim has not been released at this time, pending family notification.
