Polk County Sheriff's Office identifies 3 people who died in Sunday crash

Authorities believe a 16-year-old driver was going north when he failed to stop at a stop sign, crashing into a car driving east.

POLK COUNTY, Iowa — The Polk County Sheriff's Office has identified the three people killed in a Sunday night crash east of Ankeny.

Deputies responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of NE 46th Street and NE 94th Avenue just before 8 p.m., according to a news release.

Authorities believe 16-year-old Chad Dittmer of Elkhart was driving north when he failed to stop at a stop sign, crashing into a car driving east. Dittmer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two people in the eastbound car were also pronounced dead at the scene: 38-year-old Kolby Drees of Bondurant and 34-year-old Sara Tourte of Altoona.

Investigators said speed may have been a contributing factor in the accident.

Drees, who worked in IT for the City of Ankeny since 2019, was a very valued member of the city's team, the city said in a Facebook post.
