DES MOINES- Polk County Supervisor John Mauro (D) announced his candidacy for re-election Wednesday.
Mauro represents Polk County’s 5th district, which includes the majority of Des Moines’ south side, downtown and a portion of the inner city. He was first elected to the Board of Supervisors in 1990 and currently serves as the Chair of the Board of Supervisors.
Mauro supported collective bargaining, worker’s compensation and was a leader in passing an ordinance in Polk County to raise the minimum wage. Mauro has served on several boards, including the City of Des Moines Fire & Police Pension Board, Greater Des Moines Convention & Visitors Bureau and Polk County Health Services.
Mauro led the effort to raise 10 million dollars to help end hunger in Polk County, a problem Mauro says is still present.
“This is a Polk County issue, everyone thinks it is an inner city issue, but there are tens of thousands of people throughout Polk County that do not have enough to eat,” Mauro said. “It is time for everyone to say enough is enough.”
John has lived and worked in Polk County his entire life. He and his wife Grace have three children and seven grandchildren.
