Road collapse over the Mississippi River leaves one person dead

LANSING, Iowa – One Iowa man was killed early Tuesday morning when the road collapsed into the Mississippi River on Iowa Highway 82.

LANSING- A man is dead after an Iowa road collapsed, according to authorities.

KCRG reports that another driver witnessed the washout and accident around 4:20 a.m. Tuesday on Iowa Highway 82, which runs to the Black Hawk Bridge over to Lansing, Iowa. The witness saw the road collapse, and the car fall into the river. The car quickly became submerged into the river, and began filling up.

Police have identified the victim as 59-year-old James Walleser of Lansing. Walleser was reportedly on his way to work at the time of the accident and was reported dead at the scene.

WXOW reports that the hole was around 10 feet deep. Efforts to repair the highway are currently underway.
