Sera Alexander sentenced to 10 years in prison

DES MOINES – Sera Alexander was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Friday for killing her stepfather, Anthony Hartmann.

DES MOINES – Sera Alexander was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Friday for killing her stepfather, Anthony Hartmann.

After being charged with Murder in the Second Degree in the shooting death of Hartmann, Alexander entered a guilty plea in March to two amended charges—Involuntary Manslaughter (Class D Felony) and Reckless Use of a Firearm Causing Serious Injury (Class C Felony). 

Alexander, 30, was arrested and charged with 1st Degree Murder on May 8, 2017 after police responded to a reported home shooting at 7208 SW 17th Street in Des Moines. Hartmann, was found dead in the basement.

Alexander admitted to shooting Hartmann out of fear for her life, citing previous domestic incidents and no-contact orders. 

Alexander will begin serving her 10 year sentence immediately, and is not eligible for probation.
