GOWRIE, Iowa — In a statement released Thursday evening and posted on The Gowrie News' Facebook page, Southeast Valley Superintendent, Brian Johnson, said that the school district's middle school and high school were locked down after concern arose about a potential firearm threat.
The incident happened just one day after the deadly school shooting in Georgia that killed four people.
After receiving the report of a potential confrontation with high school students, safety protocols were immediately put in place, Johnson said.
The schools' "Secure the Perimeter" protocol was quickly established. Law enforcement was on scene within minutes as well, he added.
After an investigation, the threat was deemed not credible.
Johnson discussed how parents could help in situations like what occurred, by refraining from driving to the school or frantically calling so both phone lines and roads are left open for staff and law enforcement to better handle the situation.
