Elaine Graham Estes honored at Iowa State Fair

Estes worked at the Des Moines Public Library for 39 years, and was the first African American director.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Former Des Moines Public Library Director Elaine Graham Estes was named an Iowan of the Day at the 2024 Iowa State Fair.

Receiving a special day of recognition at the Fair on Friday, Estes can add this honor alongside her many other accomplishments.  

She was the first African American Des Moines Public Library director, working at the library for 39 years. She also helped integrate dorms at Drake University and served on different boards and organizations, according to a Des Moines Public Library Facebook post.

Every year, the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation names 10 individuals across the state who "personify the greatness of Iowa with a strong work ethic, loyalty to helping others, and an exceptional sense of Iowa pride."

Winners also receive four Iowa State Fair admission tickets, four Grandstand show tickets, use of a golf cart, VIP parking, accommodations at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown and $200.
