DES MOINES, Iowa — Get ready to roll out to the fairgrounds: The Bacon Cheeseburger Eggroll from Winn & Sara's Kitchen is officially the 2024 Iowa State Fair People's Choice Best New Food.
The award-winning dish is a fusion of American and Asian-inspired cuisine, featuring ground beef, bacon, pickles and cheese all wrapped in a pastry eggroll. The food is then drizzled with Winn and Sara's house-made burger sauce so you get the perfect bite every time.
Winn & Sara's Kitchen is a family-owned business, run by Andrew Sayasane and his parents. Sayasane told Local 5 earlier in the week that he's proud of how far his parents have come, from immigrants to starting their own business to selling their food at the Iowa State Fair.
"It just means the world to us. I'm so proud of my mom and dad both of them coming here. Wanting to have the 'American Dream.' Opening and running their own business," he said.
A total of 84 new foods were featured at this year's fair, but only three were in the running for the Best New Food title.
The Bacon Cheeseburger Eggroll faced tough competition from the Iowa Sm'Oak'ed Roll (Whatcha Smokin? BBQ) and the Lobster Corn Dog (Destination Grille).
You can find Winn & Sara's Kitchen in the southwest corner of the fairgrounds near the Beer Tent.
Fairgoers had the opportunity to cast their votes from Aug. 8 through Aug. 14.
In addition to the Best New Food prize, the Iowa State Fair also bestowed two other awards. The Abracadabra Butterfly Lemonade at Bubbly Bar and Bistro was named the best nonalcoholic drink, while the Cowgirl Cooler at JR's Southpork Ranch won the title of best alcoholic drink.
The winning dish, drink and all other new fair foods are available for purchase through the last day of the fair: Sunday, Aug. 18.
