Best fair deals: What can you do with $40 at the Iowa State Fair?

Local 5's Alex Fulton shares some options for cheap eats and free entertainment.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Between food, drinks, carnival games and rides, you can easily spend a pretty penny at the Iowa State Fair, especially those with larger families.

Local 5’s Alex Fulton wanted to see what you can get with a $40 budget.

As far as free entertainment, long-time fairgoers recommended visiting the butter cow, seeing live animals, getting a free egg on a stick at the Agriculture Building and seeing the student projects in the 4-H Exhibits Building.

Another cost-cutting tip is to bring an empty reusable water bottle. The fair allows you to refill your bottle at various water stations around the fairgrounds.

Alex got the following food items with $40:

  • Corn dog: $7
  • Grilled corn on a stick: $8
  • Cookies in a cup: $5
  • Pork chop on a stick: $9
  • Acai bowl: $11
