DES MOINES, Iowa — For half a century, the sky glider ride has given Iowans the best view of the Iowa State fairgrounds. On this day 50 years ago riders took their very first ride.
The main operator Tracy Shedd remembers opening day vividly.
"Today is the 50th anniversary... [in] 1975 the fair was August 15 through the 25th so today is the day," Shedd said.
Growing up across from the fairgrounds Shedd knew the sky was the limit for his dream career.
"We were down here investigating in 1975 when they were putting this in, I was down here in their way, trying to help do whatever. And they were short a few people actually, on the first day of the fair. So that's when I got put on the payroll," he said.
Since joining the team back in 1975, Shedd has been a pillar of safety, guiding Iowans through the skies for nearly 50 years.
Prep for the ride starts in April, with a thorough inspection, cleaning and testing to ensure everything is in perfect condition for the fair. Shedd's commitment to safety is something riders recognize.
Today's anniversary is one many Iowans can appreciate, but it's extra special for Shedd as he celebrates his life's work.
"It's nice to celebrate that. It's a milestone, and come see the fair from the air,'' Shedd said.
