Ottumwa Community School District identifies 8-year-old killed on Tuesday

8-year-old Jaxxon Cain had just finished second grade at Douma Elementary School, the Ottuwma Community School District said in a statement.

OTTUMWA, Iowa — A child was killed Tuesday after a truck backed over him, according to the Ottumwa Police Department.

First responders arrived around 12:25 p.m. to the East Alley of the 200 Block of North Hancock and Dewey Street in Ottumwa to find the 8-year-old who died due to the incident.

The truck accidentally backed over the child, who was riding a bike, in the traveled portion of the alley, police said.

The Ottumwa Community School District said the child killed was Jaxxon Cain, who attended Douma Elementary School and had just finished second grade.

"This is a heartbreaking moment for our school district. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family during this unimaginably difficult time. We will provide all the support necessary to help our students, staff, and families navigate through this tragedy," Superintendent Michael McGrory said in a statement.

The Ottumwa Police Department along with Iowa Sate Patrol will continue to investigate the incident, but no charges have been filed at this time.
