FORT DODGE, Iowa — Early Wednesday morning, Fort Dodge Fire Rescue responded to a house fire that injured two.

When crews arrived at 212 S. 16th St. in Fort Dodge at about 4:30 a.m. they found fire coming out a home's ground floor windows and a man stranded on the roof after he escaped a second floor window. Two other occupants of the home who were outside told crews a woman was still inside, but she was later found to have escaped on her own.

Fire crews extended a ladder and were able to help the man off the roof, and two of the home's occupants were treated by medics for smoke inhalation.

After the fire was brought under control, crews searched the home, finding and removing two dogs that unfortunately died.

Authorities say the kitchen and porch area suffered severe fire damage while the rest of the home suffered heavy heat and smoke damage.

The two inhalation victims were transported to Unity Point in Fort Dodge by ambulance. One has been transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals due to the severity of his injuries.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
