PERRY, Iowa — There have been 16 more layoffs related to the Tyson pork plant's upcoming closure, according to Perry Mayor Dirk Cavanaugh.
He says those 16 workers are direct contractors at the Tyson Foods plant, which will officially close on June 28.
The contractors are responsible for moving trailers around the property.
This is not the first wave of direct contractor layoffs. In late March, Local 5 learned 76 sanitation workers were being laid off.
Perry officials previously told Local 5 they were concerned about the Tyson closure impacting related jobs and industries, with Cavanaugh emphasizing just how many people rely on Perry's largest employer.
“If spouses of people that work at Tyson leave and take their spouse with them, that’s another job somewhere," he said in March.
The Greater Dallas County Development Alliance believes the Tyson plant closure could lead to the loss of nearly 550 jobs in related industries.
The future of Perry following the plant's closure largely hinges on whether or not the plant is sold.
