Waukee mother suffers broken ribs after hit-and-run crash

"When it happened, I said: 'What the hell just happened?' Cause it was just so fast," hit-and-run crash victim Peg Chitwood told Local 5 News.

URBANDALE, Iowa — A Waukee mother says she had two ribs broken after she was crashed into by a stolen car in a hit-and-run in Urbandale Tuesday night.

Peg Chitwood and her best friend had been driving back home from a T-Mobile store when police said another driver ran through a stop sign on 70th Street outside Urbandale High School, and crashed into Chitwood's car.

The other driver fled the scene on foot, officials say, leaving Chitwood and her friend -- who had been driving their car -- injured.

"When it happened, I said: 'What the hell just happened?' Cause it was just so fast," Chitwood told Local 5 News on Thursday. "I had a hard time breathing."

After the crash happened, Chitwood's daughters, Sierra Boley and Tiffany Chitwood, received calls that their mother had been injured.

"Freaking out, like almost in tears," Boley recalled receiving that call. "Saying they got in a really bad car accident... I mean that street has a [25 mph] speed limit, it's a school. There's families all around that area. What if someone was walking across the street? And they could have struck them?"

"When I got to the scene, the car that they were in was flipped completely around onto the curb," Tiffany Chitwood added.

Aside from the driver who police said ran off, Chitwood said another frustrating part of this has been that her second job doesn't offer insurance to help pay for the hours-long hospital visit. So the family is working to raise money to assist in that financial battle.

Urbandale police have not said whether the other driver has been arrested or found yet.
