WAUKEE – The city of Waukee is celebrating 150 years, by taking a peek into its past.

People gathered in the triangle area downtown to look inside the capsule that was buried in 1969. City crews drilled open the plates and brought the findings into the gazebo for everyone to look at. It mostly contained local newspapers and memorabilia from the city in ’69.

“I think it’s wonderful,” said Terry Snyder, a member of the Waukee Historical Society. “It’s bringing a lot of people together who haven’t seen each other for a long time, and it’s just wonderful to have the citizens get together and celebrate.”

The city will soon plant another time capsule in the ground. It’s set to be opened again in 2119. It will include letters to the Waukee mayor, Iowa governor and other state lawmakers.
