WASHINGTON — If your true love's holiday shopping list just so happens to include all of the gifts from "The 12 Days of Christmas," that'll cost you nearly $50,000 this year.
PNC Bank is out with its 40th annual "Christmas Price Index," which calculates the change in price consumers can expect to pay for the items featured in the classic carol.
According to the company, the cost of all those gifts for your true love increased 2.7% this year, which is significantly lower than last year's 10.5% jump.
Overall, if you bought the 12 gifts for your true love it would cost $46,729.86, PNC Bank's analysis found. When it launched in 1984, the total cost to buy all 12 gifts was $20,023.57.
What changed the most in 2023? The cost of Turtle doves soared 25% this year because of how rare the exotic doves are, according to the report. The only other gift with a double-digit percentage increase is the partridge in a pear tree. PNC said its 13.9% increase is because the price of the pear tree keeps rising year to year.
The index found there were no price increases this year for five of the gifts including: the Four Calling Birds, Five Gold Rings, Seven Swans-A-Swimming, Eight Maids-A-Milking and Nine Ladies Dancing.
The holiday tradition also calculates the "True Cost of Christmas," which would be buying all 364 gifts mentioned throughout the carol's repeated verses. That total costs more than $200,000 for the first time, coming in at $201,972.66.
