How to vote as a college student in Iowa

Find out how college students can vote in Iowa.

DES MOINES, Iowa — As the 2024 general election approaches, college students in Iowa may be unsure how the process works for them.

The good news is that college students can register to vote at their home address or their college address.

However, students must pick one location and cannot register to vote at both addresses.

While the deadline for online voter registration has passed, students can still register to vote onsite if they're voting in-person absentee or at the polls on Election Day.

Iowa has same-day voter registration, which means you can register to vote and cast your ballot on the same day. All voters have to do is present proof of identity (such as a student ID card) and residency (such as a lease, utility bill or paycheck).

College students are not required to have an Iowa driver's license and can show their student ID as proof of who they are.
