Election 2024: Voting after a recent name change

Local 5's Laryssa Leone walks your through the voting process shortly after legally changing your name.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Americans are days away from knowing the results of the 2024 election and there have been long lines of people at satellite locations waiting to cast their vote early. 

But what happens when you try to vote shortly after legally changing your name?

According to the Iowa Secretary of State website, you are required to update your voter registration if you need to change your name, address or party affiliation. 

You can submit a new voter registration online or send a form to your county auditor. You can also make this change in person by going to your precinct's polling place and and providing your proof of identity and residency. 

Here is a list of the documents you are going to want to take with you:

A valid driver's license or state ID.

Proof of residency. This can include: 

  • Utility or cell phone bill
  • Bank statement 
  • pay stub or W2
  • marriage license 
  • other government document
