IOWA, USA — Dozens of candidates across the state are running for seats in the Iowa House and Senate during the Nov. 5 general election.
All 100 state representative seats are up for reelection, as well as senators in even-numbered districts. The number of seats voters will have to decide on this year is 125.
The Iowa Legislature is firmly in the Republican Party’s control, as the party currently holds a trifecta of power, with control of the House by a margin of 64-36 and a Senate supermajority of 33-16.
Sen. Waylon Brown, R-Mitchell County, resigned from the statehouse in July.
Gov. Kim Reynolds won a second term in the 2022 midterm elections and won’t be up for reelection until 2026.
In the Senate, 21 out of 25 races are contested. Of those races, 13 involve Republican incumbents and four involve Democrats.
72 out of 100 races in the House are contested, 42 involve Republican incumbents and 18 involve a Democrat.
The 2025 Iowa legislative session will begin on Monday, Jan. 13 and end in May.
Notable Statehouse winners
Senate District 22
Long-time incumbent State Sen. Brad Zaun, R-Urbandale, lost to Democrat Matt Blake for Senate District 22, the Associated Press projects.
The AP called the race at 8:55 p.m. with Blake winning 52.4% to Zaun's 47.6%.
Zaun, who had served in the Iowa Senate since 2005 and was the second highest-ranking senate member, won his 2020 reelection by about 2 percentage points.
House District 34
Democrat Rob Johnson defeated Republican Danielle Duggan to represent House District 34, according to AP projections.
The AP called the race at 8:46 p.m. with Johnson taking almost 77% of votes versus Duggan's 23.1%.
The House seat was up to grabs following Iowa Rep. Ako Abdul-Samad's retirement — he represented Polk County for almost two decades. Johnson had to compete in a crowded primary race, beating out three other Democrats.
