Here's who students across Iowa want to see as the 2024 presidential candidates

Students across the Hawkeye state participated in the 2024 Iowa Youth Straw Poll, with over 6,000 votes cast.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Editor's note: A previous version of this story had partial results of the 2024 Iowa Youth Straw Poll, as all the votes were not in yet. Due to winter storms on Tuesday, Jan. 9, some schools were closed and had not reported their results yet. 

Students across the state of Iowa were able to make their voices heard ahead of the 2024 Iowa Caucus during the 2024 Iowa Youth Straw Poll

Organized by the Iowa Secretary of State's office, participating schools had to complete their straw polls before 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9 to be included in the data. However, due to winter weather, some schools were unable to conduct their straw polls and did so on Jan. 12. As of 8 p.m. Friday, a total of 6,604 votes were cast. 

Students were polled specifically on who they want to see be the next presidential candidate. Among Republicans, former President Donald Trump had the most votes, sitting at 2,360. He also had the most votes overall, comprising 35.7% of votes cast. Meanwhile, current President Joe Biden came in last among young Democrats. Here is the breakdown of the results:

Democratic Party

  • Marianne Williamson: 763 votes (11.6%)
  • Dean Phillips: 593 votes (9.0%)
  • Joe Biden: 583 votes (8.8%)

Republican Party

  • Donald Trump: 2,360 votes (35.7%)
  • Nikki Haley: 731 votes (11.1%)
  • Ron DeSantis: 394 votes (6.0%)
  • Vivek Ramaswamy: 283 votes (4.3%)
  • Ryan Binkley: 177 votes (2.7%)
  • Chris Christie: 84 votes (1.3%)
  • Asa Hutchinson: 62 votes (0.9%)

For the Libertarian party, Melissa Biondi took the lead over 31 other candidates with 68 votes, or 1% of the total votes cast. More caucus information can be found on the Libertarian Party of Iowa's website
