WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott, D-West Des Moines, is declaring victory in Senate District 14 following a recount.
The Dallas County Election Office confirmed the recount is over as of Monday morning, with Trone Garriott defeating Republican challenger Mark Hanson by just 29 votes. County officials will canvass the results at a Dallas County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday.
"The election is over and Dallas County residents have spoken," Trone Garriott said in a statement. "My constituents have re-elected me to preserve our freedoms, make the cost of living more affordable, and fight for our public schools. I’m ready to get back to work.”
Local 5 has reached out to Hanson for a statement, but has yet to hear back.
Trone Garriott was first elected to the Iowa Senate in 2020. Outside of her work at the statehouse, she is an ordained minister and currently works for the Des Moines Area Religious Council Food Pantry Network.
Iowa Senate District 14 represents Waukee, Adel, Van Meter and portions of West Des Moines and Clive.
