DES MOINES, Iowa — Another contender has joined the race for Iowa's 3rd Congressional District, currently held by Rep. Zach Nunn.
Melissa Vine announced she's entering the race as a Democrat.
Executive director of nonprofit The Beacon, which advocates for women recovering from trauma, Vine's campaign site says she calls on her own life experiences to help others.
Vine became a single mother of four after leaving an abusive relationship a decade ago, giving her insight into what the average Iowan might have to deal with.
"In fact, she was checking groceries for $8.50/hour when she first fell into poverty after leaving an abusive marriage. That life-changing experience taught her empathy, responsibility, and determination. The needs of Iowans are up close and personal to her, which is what will equip her to represent Iowans well," her site reads.
Vine joins military veteran and USDA worker Lanon Baccam in the race to unseat Nunn.
In 2022, Nunn narrowly beat Democratic incumbent Cindy Axne by just 2,145 votes.
Democrat Tracy Limon has also filed candidacy paperwork with the Federal Election Commission. Nunn has already filed his 2024 Statement of Candidacy paperwork with the FEC.
Next year's general election is scheduled for Nov. 5, 2024.
