WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks may not have officially won reelection yet, but she's already setting her sights on a leadership position within the U.S. House of Representatives.
Miller-Meeks announced her candidacy for Secretary of the House Republican Conference Tuesday. The role is the seventh highest position in Republican House leadership.
Rep. Lisa McClain of Michigan currently holds the title. However, McClain announced Monday she would run for House Republican Conference Chair after the current chair, Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, was appointed as U.N. Ambassador.
As a candidate in a competitive district, Miller-Meeks believes her experience is reflective of both the nation and her party as a whole.
"I have proven that I have the ability to overcome challenges to continue to represent a swing district and we must ensure that we focus on our incumbents, as well as our challengers, to continue our success," Miller-Meeks said in a statement. "The seats we need to expand our majority will come from swing or Democrat districts, and I think it would be beneficial to have someone in leadership who knows this struggle and that can help prepare our members for that tough road that 2026 promises to be."
Miller-Meeks also expressed confidence that she will win reelection, citing a more than 800 vote lead over opponent Christina Bohannan.
"It is mathematically impossible for the ground to be made up with the remaining provisional ballots left to be counted. I have no doubt that my election will be certified and I will be victorious," Miller-Meeks said.
The Associated Press has yet to call the race for either candidate.
Miller-Meeks was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2020 after defeating Iowa Rep. Rita Hart by just six votes.
In addition, Miller-Meeks serves on the Energy and Commerce and Veterans Affairs Committees and is the chair of the Conservative Climate Caucus.
