Perry Community School District postpones board meeting and return to class

The Perry Community School District moved their school board meeting until Monday, and said the students' return to classes will be postponed until further notice.

PERRY, Iowa — More than a week has passed since a school shooting rattled the small town of Perry, Iowa, shocking the entire community.

Two victims died in the shooting: sixth grader Ahmir Jolliff and Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger.

Marburger's family shared the news Sunday morning via GoFundMe, and the school district shared their condolences, even postponing crucial conversations.

Amid news of Marburger's death, the Perry Community School District announced they are pushing back their school board meeting until Monday, Jan. 15, at 3 p.m., just hours before the Iowa caucuses. It was originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

The school board meeting will allow residents and parents in the community to speak three minutes each during a public comment period. The location also shifted to the second floor of the Towncrest Building located at 1122 Willis Avenue, so as to allow more people to attend.

There will also be a Zoom link available online for anyone wanting to follow along.

The school district also said in a statement Sunday, "our school reopening plan is on hold until further notice. Elementary teachers will not return as planned [Monday.]"
