KELLEY, Iowa — A local bakery owner is doing what she can to give back to the victims of the Perry school shooting — one sweet treat at a time.
Daphane Bjork, owner of Stop & Smell the Flours in Kelley, is selling cookie sandwiches to raise money for the family of Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger, who died of injuries sustained in the shooting.
The cookie sandwiches, made up of two M&M cookies and filled with a sweet buttercream frosting, have a special meaning.
"The colorful M&M's represent the joy & happiness Dan spread throughout his family & students," Bjork wrote on the bakery's Facebook page. "The sweet filling represents the kindness that Dan filled in everyones hearts."
A half dozen cookie sandwiches run for $18, while a full dozen costs $30. Bjork is still baking away, and plans to make deliveries into next week.
"Back to the oven, that I will continue to make well over 1,400 cookies for the M&M sandwich cookies for Mr. Marburger," Bjork said on Facebook. "The colors bring me a little joy with this project, knowing how many people he touched."
It's not the first time Bjork has used her skills to support the Perry community. Right after the tragic shooting, she auctioned off a cake for $300. That money went to the family of Ahmir Jolliff.
Just a few days later, Bjork handed out free slices of pie to Perry community members.
