ALGONA, Iowa — Two young boys and their father are dead from an apparent murder-suicide that happened Monday night in Algona, the Iowa Department of Public Safety announced Wednesday evening.
Six-year-old Logan Phelon and his three-year-old brother Seth were found dead in a residence along the 400 block of South Harlan Street Monday evening as well as their father Christopher Phelon, 32, according to Algona police.
A law enforcement investigation and autopsies conducted determined the boys died from gunshot wounds. Their deaths are considered to be homicides. Christopher Phelon also died from a gunshot wound, but his manner of death was considered suicide.
Algona Community School District Superintendent Joe Carter released a statement Thursday about the deaths of the two boys:
"The Algona Community School District is saddened by the news of the Death of Logan Phelon and his brother Seth. Logan would have been a First Grade Student at Bryan Elementary this Fall and Seth would have started Preschool at Bertha Godfrey Elementary. Our thoughts go out to the families and everyone who is impacted by this tragic event."
The Algona Police Department was assisted by the Kossuth County Sheriff's Department as well as the Iowa State Patrol, Algona EMS, the Kossuth County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Kossuth County Attorney’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
