CENTRAL IOWA – Some residents have complained about their mailboxes getting hit on snow plow routes this winter. Local 5 On Your Side reached out to a few cities to learn about the protocol to get residents new mailboxes when that happens.
According to the city of Johnston, they’ve seen issues with hit mailboxes this winter, but not any more than any other winter season. Mailboxes can be hit by plow trucks because it is difficult to see from the cab of the truck. The more snow events we have, the more chances mailboxes could to be damaged.
If your mailbox is damaged, you should call or email Public Works to report damaged mailboxes or residents can fill out a claim form on the city’s website if their mailbox is damaged. When a mailbox is damaged, many cities’ Public Works places a temporary mailbox if the permanent mailbox cannot be repaired.
