AMES, Iowa — Minnesota Timberwolves guard and former Iowa State star Monte Morris is set to return to Iowa on Aug. 3 and 4 for his fifth annual basketball camp.
The two-day camp in Ames for kids ages 7-17 is focused on growing participants fundamentals, skills and basketball IQ.
Along with the focus of on-court development, Morris wants to help off the court as well.
"My high school coach would always tell me, when you get older, (you're) going to look back and be like 'he preached more being on time than anything about putting the ball in the basket,'" Morris said. "So for us, it's more so discipline, more so how to be a pro. Because you can be a pro whether you're playing basketball, playing soccer, playing tennis, football, anything, or even working in the office."
One new aspect of Morris' camp in 2024 will include Morris' mom interacting with parents at the camp.
"My mom is planning on doing something special for the the parents, so the parents can step away from the kids and just know the experiences my mama had to deal with with me being in the NBA, because it's going to be some kids at the camp that's going to make it to the WNBA or the NBA."
Morris just wrapped up his seventh season in the NBA. Year seven saw him miss the first 44 games and get traded from Detroit to Minnesota in the middle of the season. Despite the adversity, he sees the positive.
"Everybody be like, 'Man, it was a tough year,' but I felt it was my best year, because I learned a lot about myself," Morris said. "I learned a lot about myself, where I can push through anything, any adversity. And now I'm here. I'm going on year eight, and I'm in the chance to get another contract. Man, life is good. God is good, and I can bless these kids coming up soon."
Morris also added that former Cyclone All-American Ashley Joens will be at the camp to give insight into the WNBA. Camp registration is available here.
