AMES, Iowa — Jake Waters has been promoted to serve as Iowa State's running backs coach, Head Coach Matt Campbell announced Thursday.
Waters has served as a senior quality control staff member for the Iowa State offense since 2021.
"Jake is a valuable and talented member of our coaching staff and we are excited to see him in this new role," Campbell said in a statement. "He has earned this opportunity because of his hard work and the impact he's made during his four seasons with the program. His experience on our staff will make this a seamless transition for him and our team as he moves into this position."
Waters, a Council Bluffs native and Kansas State alum, has helped lead Iowa State's offense to three bowl games while producing the fourth-best scoring average and fifth-best total offense in the history of the program.
As a player at Kansas State, Waters made a name for himself as a two-year starting quarterback, breaking school records for completion percentage and passing efficiency.
After he graduated, Waters worked as a volunteer quarterbacks coach at Iowa Western Community College and an offensive assistant coach at the University of Texas at El Paso.
Waters' promotion might be the latest shakeup among Iowa State's coaching staff, but it's not the first. Earlier this week, the Los Angeles Rams announced Nate Scheelhaase would be leaving Iowa State for the NFL after just one season as the Cyclones' offensive coordinator.
