WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — New leadership is coming to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
Longtime sports professional Erin Gerlich will take over Jean Berger's position on June 8, the IGHSAU announced Thursday.
Gerlich, a Panora native and current Lake Panorama resident, has been a mainstay in Iowa girls' athletics for 15 years, leading the cause to get girls wrestling recognized as an official IGHSAU sport back in 2023.
She also became the first woman to hold the position of Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association President from 2022-23.
Most recently, Gerlich served as the associate director and sport administrator for the IGHSAU.
"I am deeply honored to be selected as the next IGHSAU Executive Director," Gerlich said in a statement. "I am committed to leading the organization towards continued success. In my new position, I look forward to championing the growth and empowerment of female athletes across Iowa."
