Des Moines Buccaneers to play this season's home games at MidAmerican Energy RecPlex

The move comes after mechanical issues arose at Buccaneer Arena.

DES MOINES, Iowa — There have been an interesting amount of moves made by the Des Moines Buccaneers Organization this year before its team has even hit the ice.

In July, it announced that it would be pulling out of the lease agreement it had made with Merle Hay Mall back in 2021.

On Wednesday, the organization announced the team would play all home games this season at the MidAmerican Energy RecPlex in West Des Moines as a stop-gap option, citing that the Urbandale Buccaneer Arena was not the most reliable option any longer after 45 years of hosting the team.

Issues with preparing the ice on time and facilitating an entire season were top worries for the team.

While adjustments will be made to make the temporary home feel like Buccaneer Arena, the organization announced that its old arena would be upkept as best as possible to facilitate local youth, high school and adult teams along with skaters as a whole for as long as possible.

"We appreciate your patience and support as we finalize the details of the upcoming season, and we work on a long-term solution. Rest-assured, we will keep you informed and will let you know as soon as our ticket changeover plan is ready to go," the organization said in its announcement.

The organization's goal is to bring the Buccaneer Arena experience to the RecPlex while capitalizing on the new facility's added benefits.
