BOONE, Iowa β Since bringing the program back in 2012, the DMACC softball team has reached the NJCAA World Series 10 times. Now, they're closing in on making their 11th overall trip and 10th in a row.
The Bears faced off against North Iowa Area Community College Monday afternoon in the Region 11-B championship game.
After wiping away a two-run deficit in the first inning to take the lead, the bears continued to create separation. DMACC remained in control and cruised to an 8-2 win over NIACC to capture the regional title in their final home game of the season.
Sophomore pitcher Courtney Donahue was dominant on the mound with 15 strikeouts.
"I was overall, pleased with my performance," said Donahue. "I thought my offense did a great job supporting me throughout the whole game. Not just stopping after 4, they continued on after the later innings so that was really good to see."
That trust in each other is what head coach Bob Ligouri credits for their success this season.
"We call it DMACC swag and it's nothing arrogant. It's nothing to try and put our opponents down, but it's the ability to know that not only can you do the job, but that your sister that you're playing alongside can."
The Bears will head to Glendive, Mont. for the Northwest Plains B District championship where they will face Dawson in a best of three series. It begins on Friday, May 10 with a double header.
